Pressed-Board, Particle Board and/or Engineered Wood Furniture Disclosure

Furniture manufactured from pressed-board, particleboard and/or engineered wood (such as IKEA furniture) are designed by the manufacturer to be transported unassembled in cartons to the retailer, and then to the customer (end user). It is not designed to withstand the normal stress of a move as an assembled unit. Surface impressions can be made on the furniture when writing without adequate support underneath the paper. Therefore, it is easy to understand that these pieces do not possess the strength of extra wood structure to adequately endure transportation, even when travelling short distances. Usually, chips and dents cannot be repaired with wood. Assembly instructions frequently suggest that the pieces of hardware be glued into place. This might not necessarily improve the structural integrity of the pieces, and it certainly makes disassembly much less likely.

Furniture constructed from pressboard is difficult to move as any type of movement loosens the joints. We will exercise reasonable care in moving this type of furniture, but cannot guarantee that it will be delivered in the same conditions it is in prior to the move. The newer pieces have plugs that allow for easy disassembling. It is in your best interest that the furniture be disassembled.

Please choose from one of the following (Please Circle and Initial):

  • OPTION 1: I have chosen to disassemble all pressed-board, particleboard, and/or engineered wood furniture prior to move. I assume all responsibility for damages to the pressed-board, particleboard, and/or engineered wood furniture which may occur during the disassembly of the furniture._____
  • OPTION 2: I have engaged the services of another individual or company to disassemble all pressed-board, particleboard, and/or engineered wood furniture prior to move. I assume all responsibility for damages to the pressed-board, particleboard, and/or engineered wood furniture during the disassembly of the unit._____
  • OPTION 3: I am tending to furniture constructed of pressed-board, particleboard, and/or engineered wood furniture fully as assembled as part of our move. I understand that any claim for damage to the pressed-board, particleboard, and/or engineered wood furniture may be denied due to inherent vice, based upon the fact that fully assembled particleboard, and/or engineered wood furniture are intrinsically susceptible to damage as outlined above._____

END OF LOADING WALK THROUGH: It is recommended that you or a representative is available at the end of the loading process. This will ensure that all items covered in the scope of the initial estimate and items added to the scope during the pre-move walkthrough are transported to the destination. If you or your representative is not present at this time, University Movers is not liable for any future transport or monetary compensation for the items not transported.

ADDITIONAL CHARGES: There may be additional charges for transportation of items not included in the original estimate. Extra pick-ups and/or deliveries, disassembly of furniture and appliances, removal and /or replacement of doors, packing done at the request of the shipper and any service that is considered out of the ordinary may incur additional charges.

For long distance moves, if there are any stairs or elevators that were not previously mentioned, there will be an additional $88.00 charge for every flight of stairs. In addition, the truck must have reasonable access to your home/apartment. If access to the home is more than 75 feet away there will be an additional charge.

Hourly Rates/Double Drive Time: Most local jobs are billed at an hourly rate. Please take into consideration that the drive time from the origin to the destination is doubled. An example of this is, if it takes .25 hours (15 minutes) to get from the pickup address to the delivery address then the time billed would be .50 hours (30 minutes). The State of California has codified this billing regulation into law so that your mover's location in relation to your move destination is not a factor in the price (it is against the law for movers to charge from when they leave their facility to when they return to their facility). Under this guideline, the only factor in price for transportation time is where your pickup address is in relation to your destination address.

Overtime: Anything over 8 hours on the same job will be billed at time and half.
